E-HEADSPACE THE FIRST ISRAELI PLATFORM- RAPID MENTAL HEALTH RESPONSE FOR YOUTH
by EHeadspace by Enosh-The Israeli Mental Health Association
EHeadspace a project within the organization is seeking to help adolescents and young adults experiencing mental health issues, who are reluctant to seek help. Seeking to establish the first online portal in Israel that provides immediate information. A sum of $100K from GGC members will be designated to the technology and content portion and expecting to help over 400 youth in the first year – accessibility of information will SAVE LIVES.
The Importance and Impact of the project
e-headspace is the first online support platform in Israel, providing mental health treatment, consultation and content without physical limitations. It is designed to increase accessibility to mental health services and encourage young people to turn for support. Early detection and treatment reduce rates of depression and anxiety, prevent deterioration of symptoms and save lives.
The Need
Adolescents and young adults frequently experience mental health issues, yet are reluctant to seek help. This is because public mental health services often have negative associations, are inaccessible, unfamiliar or slow and are unable to meet the youth’s needs. Over the last decade in Israel, the average suicide attempt rate has been recorded as 6,200 attempts per annum, with 50% of those attempts being youth under the age of 25. In addition, suicide has been found to be the 2nd highest cause of death amongst young males aged 15-24 and the 3rd highest cause of death amongst females of the same age.
Data indicates that currently in Israel, approximately 73% of youth aged 13-18 reported that they have experienced a mental health crisis or mental health problem (21% reported feeling anxious and 24% reported feeling depressed). 45% of the youth say they will refrain from requesting mental health treatment or consultation. 25% of the youth say they are too ashamed to ask for mental health support. 45% of youth say they will not turn to mental health treatment because it is too expensive. 59% of parents say they prefer to send their children to private mental health services rather than public ones.
Adolescence is known as a crucial period for mental well-being, when emotional disorders such as: depression, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse may emerge. The struggle is even greater for youth who come from marginalized families that do not have access to psychological services and emotional support. This highlights the importance of providing accessible, high quality mental health services which can provide appropriate solutions in a timely manner.
Our Solution & Strategies
To try and mitigate the accessibility issues and stigma mentioned above, Enosh in partnership with headspace Australia launched headspace Israel. The headspace model is based on a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, integration into a local city/town infrastructure and partnerships with additional service providers in the field of mental health. Additionally, since the emergence of Covid-19, headspace service provision remained uninterrupted as it moved on to a digital platform. Consequentially, Enosh decided to establish a permanent digital service and e-headspace was born.
e-headspace is an innovative, online community mental health center which offers digital professional mental health services in a youth-friendly environment and aims to improve the mental and social well-being of young people aged 12-25 nationwide. The model of work includes digitally scheduled video calls with a professional therapist. Additionally, in between sessions the therapeutic process is preserved using an online communication application called-Amigo. This is an automated messaging app which sends daily tasks and messages to each participant (predetermined by the therapist), while the system monitors the performance reports and provides immediate communication from the virtual therapist (Amigo), it also reports back the data to the therapist to monitor progress and intervene if necessary.
